WASHINGTON– Today, Re:Create released the following statement in response to the Bipartisan U.S. House of Representatives AI Task Force’s release of its AI report.
“We applaud the AI Task Force for acknowledging the careful, considered approach Congress and the Courts must take to address copyright issues raised by AI. As the U.S. ushers in the next wave of AI innovation, it is crucial that Congress and the Courts recognize how a balanced copyright system that supports Fair Use and Freedom of Expression will be critical to safeguarding both creativity and innovation. As the report says, ‘it will be vital to avoid overreach’ in any congressional action,” said Executive Director Brandon Butler.
“We especially applaud the task force for acknowledging the role the Courts will play in determining how our existing copyright framework applies to AI. The Courts’ considered application of fair use to new technology has helped the U.S. remain the leader in both internet technology and online creativity. Congress should be wary of any changes to this framework lest they upset a balanced copyright system that is pro-innovation, pro-consumer, and pro-creator.”
