Washington, D.C. – Following the introduction of the Stealth Bot Prohibition Act by Reps. Laurel Lee (R-FL) and Valerie Foushee (D-NC) and Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), Re:Create Executive Director Brandon Butler issued the following statement.
“Today’s introduction of the Stealth Bot Prohibition Act isn’t about internet security or “transparency,”; it’s an attempt to control who can access, aggregate, and learn from public information,” said Re:Create Executive Director Brandon Butler. “By turning standard automated tools into legal targets, this legislation threatens the fundamental mechanics of an open internet and rolls back fair use principles that power research, innovation, and free expression. It is truly Orwellian to suggest that sweeping new barriers to public information will somehow preserve the open internet.”
