OpenAI is a powerful validation of what copyright scholars and fair use advocates have maintained all along: training AI models on public information is fair use.” said Re:Create Executive Director Brandon Butler. “By recognizing that analyzing and learning from existing works is transformative, the DOJ is protecting a fundamental copyright principle that drives technological progress, open competition, and public access to knowledge. The government rightly intervened to ensure that fair use can continue to power American leadership on AI innovation.”
