Open Source Initiative Joins the Re:Create Coalition

WASHINGTON, D.C. Re:Create announced today that Open Source Initiative, a group focused on education and advocacy efforts to promote awareness of non-proprietary software and share how Open Source technologies, licenses, and models of development can provide economic and strategic advantages, has joined the coalition.

“Re:Create is excited to welcome the Open Source Initiative as our newest member. Their team of passionate advocates and subject matter experts brings deep knowledge to our coalition’s work to maintain a balanced copyright system and an internet that is open and free for innovation and collaboration,” said Re:Create Executive Director Brandon Butler. “Open Source Initiative adds a unique perspective to the coalition and will be a critical contributor to the conversations to come.”

“The Open Source Initiative’s core mission lies in the preservation of the freedoms and opportunities of Open Source software and Open Source AI so that they can be enjoyed by all,” said Katie Steen-James, senior U.S. policy manager at OSI. “As society faces growing questions on emerging technologies, it is crucial to be engaged with others on advocacy for the open internet to ensure the future data ecosystem encourages creativity, preserves access to knowledge, and remains open, equitable, and driven by the public interest.”

Open Source Initiative has proven to be a leading voice on Open Source policies and principles. Their core purpose is to maintain the Open Source Definition, which they do through their Open Source Initiative Approved License trademark and program. This program, which sets standards for Open Source licenses, fosters a trusted foundation that enables developers, users, companies, and governments to collaborate and build Open Source solutions. OSI also co-developed the Open Source AI Definition, to ensure AI systems are made available under terms that grant users the freedoms to use, study, modify, and share them.

About the Open Source Initiative – The Open Source Initiative is a global nonprofit organization building the future powered by open collaboration, transparency, and innovation as the leading voice on the policies and principles of Open Source.
