Creative Commons Joins Re:Create

WASHINGTON. D.C. Re:Create announced today that Creative Commons, the nonprofit behind the licenses and tools the world uses to share, has joined as its newest member.

“As emerging technology continues to be integrated into creative industries, it is critical that lawmakers support balanced copyright policies that protect expressive freedoms and promote innovation and creativity,” said Re:Create Executive Director Brandon Butler. “Creative Commons empowers individuals and communities by creating open license solutions that promote the sharing of knowledge and culture. CC’s deep knowledge and broad community of users will strengthen our work as a coalition. Re:Create members are thrilled to have them join our ranks.”

“Freedom of expression and creativity is protected by the limitations and exceptions in copyright law as well as the exclusive rights that authors can manage using our licensing tools,” said Creative Commons General Counsel Sarah Hinchliff Pearson. “To fulfill our mission of equipping the public with technical, legal, and policy solutions to enable knowledge sharing and culture in the public interest, there must be a balanced copyright system. Creative Commons is excited to join Re:Create and to work alongside leaders who support policies that protect creativity, innovation and freedom of expression.”

Through its licensing and public domain tools, Creative Commons provides a standardized way for individuals and organizations to grant copyright permissions for creative and academic works; ensure proper attribution; and enable others to copy, distribute, and make use of those works.
