The coalition is led by Executive Director Brandon Butler, an experienced copyright lawyer and partner at Jaszi Butler PLLC. Brandon has over 15 years of experience in copyright policy and practice and has fought for a balanced copyright system throughout his career. Most recently, Brandon was the Director of Copyright and Licensing at the University of Virginia Library, where he advised the Library and its users on their rights to research, teach, and learn within the bounds of copyright law.

Before moving to Charlottesville, Brandon spent a decade focused on copyright policy in Washington D.C., including as Practitioner-in-Residence in the IP Clinic at American University Washington College of Law and Director of Public Policy Initiatives at the Association of Research Libraries. Brandon has represented the interests of the nation’s leading research institutions in federal government and in amicus briefs in landmark cases like Oracle v. Google, Goldsmith v. Warhol, Authors Guild v. HathiTrust, Kirtsaeng v. Wiley, and ABC v. Aereo. He helped secure new or expanded DMCA exemptions on behalf of libraries, film scholars, and software preservationists. In private practice, Brandon advises filmmakers, television producers, podcasters, and other creators and publishers on the proper application of fair use to their work.
